Royal Ascot 2007
Royal Ascot, horses and hats!
As much as I love horses, it's all about the hats for me. There's no other event where taste and discretion is given a healthy sideline and a riot of hats can be seen all over the news.
Leaving aside the obvious stunt hats (cakes, enormous stars, cocktail glasses, ashtrays, horses heads etc) the saucer hat was making a real impact. I love this shape: simple, classy and stunning.
Perfect 'tilts' there, too - it's all in the angle :)
Ok, I know I just said I'd leave aside the stunt hats but I just can't.
Apparently model and 'Sun Girl', Miss Mahoney, was 'urging racegoers to quit before next month’s ban — and ran smoke-rings round the competition.' (The Sun).
No, sorry Sun. It's a very bad hat. Not only that but I believe Schiaperelli did it first, and better, way back in the 1930s. Not only *that* but it makes me want to poke my eyes out with my extra long cigarette holder.
I leave you with some beautiful vintage adverts showing how to properly accessorise with a hat and a cigarette.
